FAQ
Questions
Is my photo uploaded anywhere?
No. The analysis runs entirely in your browser. The page downloads the open-source face analysis models (Google MediaPipe) once, but your photo never leaves your device.
Does a "Ready" result guarantee my photo will be accepted?
No. This is an independent pre-check that estimates measurements with computer vision. The U.S. Department of State makes the final decision. Use the result to catch problems early, and read the official instructions before you submit.
What does the auto-fix change?
Only the crop, the size and the compression. It frames the head so head size and eye height fall inside the required ranges, resizes the photo to 600 × 600 pixels and saves it as a JPEG under 240 KB. It never edits your face or the background. Background and lighting problems need a new photo.
Can I use a photo taken with my phone?
Yes, if it meets all the requirements. Ask someone else to take it from about 1.5 m (5 ft) away at eye level, in front of a plain white wall with soft, even light. Selfies at arm's length often distort the face and cause shadows.
Does every family member need a photo?
Yes. You, your spouse and each unmarried child under 21 need a separate photo that meets the same requirements, even if they don't plan to immigrate.
Where do I submit my entry?
Only on the official website, dvprogram.state.gov. Be careful with websites or agents that ask for payment to "guarantee" a result.
